Walking vs. Running for Independent Living Fitness.

Walking Vs. Running for Overall Health and Fitness at Laurel Springs Independent Living

Feeling the amazing Oklahoma Spring weather and thinking that 2019 would be a great year to start working on your physical health improvement? If you live at Laurel Springs Mustang independent living, you already know about our superb exercise facility and clubhouse. You’ve seen the fun that Summer will bring with our resort style swimming pool. Why now get an early 2019 start on getting your Summer fun body into shape and explore our walking trails?
Should you choose walking versus running for overall health benefits here at Laurel Springs?
Both aerobic activities are simple to perform and promote weight loss. And both walking and running help regulate a healthy sleep rhythm, elevate your energy levels while awake, and even allow you to maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Running and walking can also be social exercises that you enjoy with friends or family members, and you can take a jog or a hike just about any time of the year, here at Laurel Springs.
Choose an Independent Living community with great walking trails and open spaces!
Just remember that if you choose walking over running to improve your overall health, you will need to walk twice as far as you run to gain the same weight-loss benefits. Running is much more rigorous on your body and burns more calories. But walking is also much easier on your joints since the impact of your foot striking the ground is lessened. If you are just beginning some type of dedicated physical regimen, walking is definitely recommended, and you can always build up your endurance and physical fitness to include running in the future.

Always Check With Your Health Professional Before Making Big Changes in Your Physical Exercise Regimen.

And in some cases, walking can give you many of the same benefits as running, with less downside. For instance, extensive research taken from the Runners and Walkers Health Study shows that both running and walking equally cut down on your risk of contracting age-related cataracts. That significant body of information, compiled from tens of thousands of runners and walkers, also showed that runners could expect a reduction in the risk of contracting heart disease by about 4.5% by running one hour a day.
But those who spent that same one hour daily simply walking cut their risk of heart disease by over 9%. Certainly, walking and running both improve your overall health and fitness much more than if you were sedentary instead. So choose whichever exercise best fits your current fitness levels and situation. And for weight loss, running is definitely the better vehicle than walking. That is because of the increased energy expenditure, elevated heart rate, and calorie burn. Just be sure to wear runner appropriate shoes that protect your body and joints from excessive wear and tear!

Laurel Springs Mustang Provides The Best in Independent Senior Living

You should always consult a doctor before adding any type of exercise to your daily routine. But both walking and running are excellent ways to get you up and active and are low-cost activities which you can enjoy even if you only have a limited amount of time on your hands. There is no argument that running or walking is much healthier than not doing either, so put one foot in front of the other today and begin to enjoy the heart and total body benefits are that these simple but healthy exercises can provide.

Is it cold enough for you in Oklahoma this February?

Is it cold enough for you in Oklahoma this February?

Cold weather tips

Here are some tips we’ve found online that can help with being aware of the issues of getting a bit older and cold weather.

People who are sick may have special problems keeping warm. Do not let it get too cold inside and dress warmly. Even if you keep your temperature between 60°F and 65°F, your home may not be warm enough to keep you safe. This is a special problem if you live alone because there is no one else to feel the chilliness of the house or notice if you are having symptoms of hypothermia.

Here are some tips for keeping warm while you’re inside:

  • Set your heat to at least 68–70°F. To save on heating bills, close off rooms you are not using. Close the vents and shut the doors in these rooms, and keep the basement door closed. Place a rolled towel in front of all doors to keep out drafts.
  • Make sure your house isn’t losing heat through windows. Keep your blinds and curtains closed.
  • Dress warmly on cold days even if you are staying in the house. Throw a blanket over your legs. Wear socks and slippers.
  • When you go to sleep, wear long underwear under your pajamas, and use extra covers. Wear a cap or hat.
  • Make sure you eat enough food to keep up your weight. If you don’t eat well, you might have less fat under your skin. Body fat helps you to stay warm.
  • Drink alcohol moderately, if at all. Alcoholic drinks can make you lose body heat.
  • Ask family or friends to check on you during cold weather. If a power outage leaves you without heat, try to stay with a relative or friend.

You may be tempted to warm your room with a space heater. But, some space heaters are fire hazards, and others can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has information on the use of space heaters. Read the following for more information: Reducing Fire Hazards for Portable Electric Heaters and Seven Highly Effective Portable Heater Safety Habits.

Bundle Up on Windy, Cold Days

Heavy wind can quickly lower your body temperature. Check the weather forecast for windy and cold days. On those days, try to stay inside or in a warm place. If you have to go out, wear warm clothes, and don’t stay out in the cold and wind for a long time.

Here are some other tips:

  • Dress for the weather if you have to go out on chilly, cold, or damp days.
  • Wear loose layers of clothing. The air between the layers helps to keep you warm.
  • Put on a hat and scarf. You lose a lot of body heat when your head and neck are uncovered.
  • Wear a waterproof coat or jacket if it’s snowy.
  • Change your clothes right away if they get damp or wet.

Illness, Medicines, and Cold Weather

Some illnesses may make it harder for your body to stay warm.

  • Thyroid problems can make it hard to maintain normal body temperature.
  • Diabetes can keep blood from flowing normally to provide warmth.
  • Parkinson’s disease and arthritis can make it hard to put on more clothes, use a blanket, or get out of the cold.
  • Memory loss can cause a person to go outside without the right clothing.

Talk with your doctor about your health problems and how to prevent hypothermia.

Taking some medicines and not being active also can affect body heat. These include medicines you get from your doctor and those you buy over-the-counter, such as some cold medicines. Ask your doctor if the medicines you take may affect body heat. Always talk with your doctor before you stop taking any medication.

Here are some topics to talk about with your doctor to stay safe in cold weather:

  • Ask your doctor about the signs of hypothermia.
  • Talk to your doctor about any health problems and medicines that can make hypothermia a special problem for you. Your doctor can help you find ways to prevent hypothermia.
  • Ask about safe ways to stay active even when it’s cold outside.

What Are the Warning Signs of Hypothermia?

Sometimes it is hard to tell if a person has hypothermia. Look for clues. Is the house very cold? Is the person not dressed for cold weather? Is the person speaking slower than normal and having trouble keeping his or her balance?

Watch for the signs of hypothermia in yourself, too. You might become confused if your body temperature gets very low. Talk to your family and friends about the warning signs so they can look out for you.

Early signs of hypothermia:

  • Cold feet and hands
  • Puffy or swollen face
  • Pale skin
  • Shivering (in some cases the person with hypothermia does not shiver)
  • Slower than normal speech or slurring words
  • Acting sleepy
  • Being angry or confused

Later signs of hypothermia:

  • Moving slowly, trouble walking, or being clumsy
  • Stiff and jerky arm or leg movements
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Blacking out or losing consciousness

Call 9-1-1 right away if you think someone has warning signs of hypothermia.

What to do after you call 9-1-1:

  • Try to move the person to a warmer place.
  • Wrap the person in a warm blanket, towels, or coats—whatever is handy. Even your own body warmth will help. Lie close, but be gentle.
  • Give the person something warm to drink, but avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine, such as regular coffee.
  • Do not rub the person’s legs or arms.
  • Do not try to warm the person in a bath.
  • Do not use a heating pad.

Whether you are retired or just wanting to take advantage of a quality 55+ community, at Laurel Springs our focus is on making sure that your life with us is the best it can be.

At Laurel Springs Mustang, we have wonderful walking trails and indoor fitness equipment for you when those Oklahoma days are a bit too windy for a walk. Speaking of walking, we highly encourage our Laurel Springs Family to start a healthy habit like walking.

If you are interested in leveraging the walking trails, fitness gym, and our community activities to enhance Senior lifestyle exercise opportunities, then you’ll want to do some research on what time of day is best for walking and exercise.

Love Walking? What’s the best time of day to Walk and Exercise?

When you are planning out your walking routine, you might wonder if there is the best time of day to take a walk.

From a calories-burned point of view, there isn’t one time of day better than the other to walk. However, there are more considerations than burning calories that may influence when you walk; some bodily functions, and especially the habit of walking, respond better based on the time of day you walk.

The time of day for walks that are best for Senior lifestyle exercise is broken down into four periods throughout the day:

  • Morning Walks
  • Noon Walks
  • Afternoon Walks
  • Evening Walks

Morning Walking:

A morning walk has several advantages, such as sharpening your mental acuity and revving up your metabolism that will carry through for the rest of the day. So while you don’t burn any more calories by exercising in the morning, you will end up burning more throughout the day by going for morning walks.

The healthy lifestyle improvements that you could experience include improvement in your blood pressure, walking your dog with you, positive mental health and mood boost, walking to improve balance and prevent falls, avoiding some issues of heart disease, and feeling good about establishing a healthy daily routine for yourself.

Noon Walking:

A Noon walk, usually done at work, exercising during your lunch break before eating the healthy lunch you brought from home, reduces stress, curbs hunger and improves blood flow so you can maintain your sharpness throughout the afternoon. If you’re retired here at Laurel Springs then you probably won’t find this time period a problem to work into your daily activities.

Afternoon Walking:

Studies have shown that exercising between 3 pm and 7 pm is the best time to build endurance and muscle. Increasing your endurance not only allows you to walk farther but faster before you’ll get tired.

Building muscle gives your body better definition, tones the muscles you already have along with increasing their size. Larger muscles mean more calories burned per day, but don’t worry, you won’t build enough to give you that bulked look.

The only conflict you might find is that Laurel Springs has many of our social events occurring during this time period. Check with our Social Director, Mary Harris, to make sure you won’t miss the chance for a great afternoon walk and participating in our wonderful community activities.

Evening Walking:

Exercising in the evening is a good way to reduce stress from a day of work. This time of day can be easier for some people as their muscles are already warm and flexible from the day’s activities. For many people, this perceived reduction of effort required makes exercising more enjoyable than during other times of the day.

A big advantage to evening walking is being able to stop by our clubhouse before or after and still participate in social fun. Sunsets are also wonderful at Laurel Springs Mustang.

Some people end up not exercising because they can’t find a 30-minute block of time each day to devote to it. However walking time is cumulative – for example, you get the same benefits from walking 10 minutes three times per day as you do once for 30 minutes. So if “chunking” works better for you, then walk according to that plan.

Experts agree that it isn’t the time of day you exercise that is important, but to do it when it best fits into your schedule. As with all senior lifestyle exercise plans, consistency counts, so if you can find a time of day when you can routinely walk, you’ll start to see results sooner and derive more benefits from walking. Staying active is what’s the most important thing to focus on with any exercise program.

Thinking that walking could be a great exercise and pastime for you here at Laurel Springs Mustang? Come by our clubhouse, visit with our staff and get familiar with our walking trails here at Laurel Springs Mustang. We provide the facilities and trails to make cardio walking activity a part of your daily health plan, now it’s just up to you to make it happen!

What are some additional exercise activities you might want to research here at Laurel Springs?

We keep our residents fully booked with fun and informative social activities, happy hours, day trips, potluck dinner socials, and concerts. It’s important to come by the clubhouse and let our Social Director know about your interest in activities for your community. We are always open to hearing about your interests and would love to structure our social calendar around suggestions from our residents on things of interest to do.

Downsizing from your home and transitioning to a senior community can be very overwhelming. Do you want to downsize and have less maintenance? Have you experienced a physical decline? No matter your reason, we have the resources and staff to make your move easier.

We partner with local business owners who are as dedicated to our customers as we are. Some of our business partners include senior move specialists, real estate professionals, and financial consultants.

Real Estate Professionals – If you need a realtor to help you sell your existing home, we partner with realtors who are certified as a Senior Real Estate Specialist. This allows our clients to have an extra communication link with between the realtor, their future home and themselves.

We have the resource partners to assist you. Love taking a walk? Laurel Springs is here to help!

How to Make Time to Walk More Each Day at Laurel Springs Mustang.
Laurel Springs Health Tips!

We are all busy nowadays, so how does one find the time to walk every day? It really isn’t that hard. For most people, it requires committing a little more time here and there out of each day. That’s why we are publishing Laurel Springs health tips!

Many people that should be exercising don’t because they believe they have to do it in one chunk of time; that is not true. While we should each get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, it can be done in small chunks of time throughout the day and still reap the same benefit.

At Laurel Springs Retirement, not only do we want to encourage you to start walking, but we also are big supporters of exercise using the facilities and equipment we provide to you here in our community! Whether you decide to stroll our beautifully landscaped grounds and walking trails or take advantage of our climate protected clubhouse exercise options, we welcome you getting into the Laurel Springs health initiatives.

Laurel Springs Health Tips

But keeping track of small chunks of time spent each day walking can be trying and most people will soon give up. Instead, let technology keep track of it for you in the form of steps walked.

Wear a pedometer or accelerometer and strive to walk 10,000 steps each day. Before you dismiss that goal as impossible, try it. You are already racking up more steps walking each day than you realize. By creatively adding in some of these opportunities to your workday, you’ll soon reach your daily goal.

Workday and Lifestyle Walking Opportunities at Laurel Springs

There are many ways you can get in some extra steps while going to or from work, or while at work or home here at Laurel Springs Mustang. Here are some Laurel Springs Health Tips for you:

  • Instead of finding a parking spot close to your workplace or home, park at the far end of the lot and walk in the rest of the way. It only takes a few extra minutes each way and the steps add to your daily goal.
  • If you take public transportation, get off a stop or two before the closest stop to your work and walk the rest of the way.
  • Once you are at your workplace, take the stairs instead of the elevator to your office or at least for a few floors.
  • As a healthy alternative to emailing a coworker in your same building, get out of your chair and walk over to their desk.
  • If you have to go to a different floor for lunch, walk there and back.
  • Instead of eating a big lunch in the cafeteria, bring a healthy lunch to work. Strap on your walking shoes and go outside for a walk. Just allow yourself enough time to get back, cool down and eat.

By incorporating a few of these tips into your workday, you will most likely be at goal and you added very little extra time to your workday or day to day personal activities.

As a final note, keep track of the number of steps walked each day. On days when you don’t meet goal, figure out what you can change so that the next time you reach your daily goal. It could be walking further, faster or seeking out a new step opportunity. Use a FitBit or a smartphone app or accessory to help you keep track of progress.

Remember that here at Laurel Springs Mustang, our lovely gated community is focused on providing you the best in social, physical and emotional health-enhancing opportunities for you to live your best years ever! Enjoy reading our Laurel Springs health tips and then schedule a tour of our active adult community!

Moving to Laurel Springs? Let’s Pick a Warm Day for It!

Moving is bad enough, but moving in wet, muddy, sloppy weather should be illegal.

Alas, it’s not, and if you have no choice but to move during winter, do yourself a favor and hire professional movers.

If that’s not possible, pay heed to 5 of the most important tips from the pros.

1. What will you do with a small pet?

At Laurel Springs Retirement, we are happy to have your small pet join you in living here. If you’re moving your pet then you’ll need to work quickly during a winter-weather move and, since pets tend to get in the way during periods of excitement, find a place to “stash” them during the process.

Consider asking a family member to watch the precious pet or hire a sitter. Pets can also be placed in boarding where they’ll be safe.

2. What does the weather service say?

The best way to remain updated on weather conditions is with an app on your phone.

AccuWeather offers a free weather app and also a brilliant Road Trip Planner (you’ll need your laptop for this).

Many local TV station news departments offer apps that provide local weather alerts. In Minnesota, for instance, movers can download the CBS Minnesota app, or get road condition information from the Department of Transportation.

Check their websites or search iTunes or Google Play for a region-specific app.

3. Pack the necessities first

The last thing you’ll want to do after slogging through messy weather is to have to go through all those boxes to find the essential items you’ll need right away.

Before packing anything else, fill a box with the following:

  • Old towels and rags to wipe wet floors.
  • Snow/ice removal items, such as a shovel, ice scraper and a walkway de-icer
  • A change of clothing for all family members (including dry shoes or boots)
  • Snacks
  • Food for the pets (don’t forget the bowls)
  • Several large bottles of drinking water
  • Any medications you take daily
  • Bathroom items such as a shower curtain, shampoo, soap, toilet paper
  • Valuables
  • Coffee maker and everything to go with it
  • Things to keep the kids occupied

Place the box in the trunk of your car.

4. Protect your electronics

“Electronic components can develop condensation as the temperature decreases,” according to the experts at Bekins. “This condensation can cause water damage or even short-circuiting,” they caution.

Think “insulation” when considering how to protect your electronics. First, wrap each item in bubble wrap, then in a blanket. Place each item in a bubble-wrapped box and seal it tightly. Then, wrap the box in either bubble wrap or a moving blanket.

5. Use extra care when moving appliances

As soon as you move in, you’ll be tempted to get the washing machine and dryer set up, but don’t give in to the temptation.

Appliance manufacturers say that washers need to sit for at least 12 hours. This is to ensure that any traces of water that remained in them while moving hasn’t turned to ice, which could damage the appliance.

And, yes, the dryer needs to come to room temperature as well. Otherwise, the igniter and heating element may become brittle.

Sudden changes in temperature can also be lethal to your electronics, so unwrap them and allow them to sit for a while.

Love Christmas? Spread Holiday Kindness to All!

Holiday Kindness Counts in the Christmas Season

10 small ways to brighten someone’s day this Christmas season.

It’s the holiday Christmas season here in Oklahoma and at Laurel Springs Mustang! We love Christmas at Laurel Springs and the fun of the holidays! Our friends and family members deserve our care and holiday kindness, but so does everyone whom we meet in our lives. As we start to focus on being a ‘Good Giver’ instead of a ‘Taker’, we find more opportunities to enhance our lives and the lives of others around us by living the Christmas spirit and spreading holiday kindness.

Let’s all try to focus on ‘kindness’ this holiday season and then see if we can make this a 2019 resolution to carry us through the new year!

The holidays are more than candy canes, good deeds, a special time of the year, and eggnog.

Why is ‘kindness’ important?

According to research gathered by the non-profit Random Acts of Kindness organization, kindness increases our energy, happiness, and lifespan — and decreases our pain, depression, and stress. But we don’t need science to tell us what we already know: When we go about our days actively seeking opportunities to do little things for others, it makes us feel great.

Here are 10 ways you can leave a trail of warm-and-fuzzy feelings in your wake this holiday season.

  1. Give the gift of a compliment. Make it specific and authentic. Love the shoes of the person in front of you in line at the post office? Don’t hold that thought captive in your head — share it and make that person’s day!
  2. Return stranded grocery carts to the parking lot corral. People will notice — and might be inspired to copy your kindness. And even if they don’t notice, you’ve hopefully prevented someone’s car from getting dinged!
  3. Bring back the lost art of courtesy. Hold the door, be the last one off the elevator and let someone with fewer items get in line before you at the convenience store. Spend time looking for opportunities to be courteous.
  4. Pen a handwritten note to someone. In a time when Americans will send upwards of 781 billion text messages each month, according to statisticbrain.com, old-fashioned handwritten notes carry more meaning than ever.
  5. Greet people by name in a genuine way — at the gym, at work, at the community center and anywhere you encounter people you know on a first-name basis. The Washington Post reports that using a person’s name is the ”fastest and most reliable way of building rapport.“
  6. Give up your parking spot. Yes, the parking lot is packed and you’ve been circling around for 5 minutes. But just think how good you’ll feel letting someone else take the spot.
  7. Tip big — maybe not as big as the man who recently gave a Chicago waitress $11,000, but even an extra dollar or two beyond the standard 15–20 percent is sure to make your server feel appreciated.
  8. Make a donation. Regardless of the size of the gift, generosity ”lights up the same part of your brain that responds to food,“ according to a 2016 report from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Not feeling that flush with cash? Volunteer your time!
  9. Spring for treats. Whether it’s a tray of chai lattes for your book club or an ice- cold bottle of water for your mail carrier on a hot day, you’ll be delivering a big-time day brightener.
  10. Smile. Not only will you provide a warm connection point for another human being, but you’ll also be giving your brain a feel-good boost. The mere act of showing off your pearly whites activates neural messaging in your brain, reports Psychology Today — and that boosts your health and happiness.

Can you think of more ways to create kindness in our world? It really costs us nothing to share an attitude of kindness and the rewards for ourselves and our world will be more fruitful than you can imagine! Let’s work on keeping the feeling of holiday kindness all year and enjoy our friends and family at Laurel Springs Mustang!
