Love Christmas? Spread Holiday Kindness to All!

Holiday Kindness Counts in the Christmas Season

10 small ways to brighten someone’s day this Christmas season.

It’s the holiday Christmas season here in Oklahoma and at Laurel Springs Mustang! We love Christmas at Laurel Springs and the fun of the holidays! Our friends and family members deserve our care and holiday kindness, but so does everyone whom we meet in our lives. As we start to focus on being a ‘Good Giver’ instead of a ‘Taker’, we find more opportunities to enhance our lives and the lives of others around us by living the Christmas spirit and spreading holiday kindness.

Let’s all try to focus on ‘kindness’ this holiday season and then see if we can make this a 2019 resolution to carry us through the new year!

The holidays are more than candy canes, good deeds, a special time of the year, and eggnog.

Why is ‘kindness’ important?

According to research gathered by the non-profit Random Acts of Kindness organization, kindness increases our energy, happiness, and lifespan — and decreases our pain, depression, and stress. But we don’t need science to tell us what we already know: When we go about our days actively seeking opportunities to do little things for others, it makes us feel great.

Here are 10 ways you can leave a trail of warm-and-fuzzy feelings in your wake this holiday season.

  1. Give the gift of a compliment. Make it specific and authentic. Love the shoes of the person in front of you in line at the post office? Don’t hold that thought captive in your head — share it and make that person’s day!
  2. Return stranded grocery carts to the parking lot corral. People will notice — and might be inspired to copy your kindness. And even if they don’t notice, you’ve hopefully prevented someone’s car from getting dinged!
  3. Bring back the lost art of courtesy. Hold the door, be the last one off the elevator and let someone with fewer items get in line before you at the convenience store. Spend time looking for opportunities to be courteous.
  4. Pen a handwritten note to someone. In a time when Americans will send upwards of 781 billion text messages each month, according to statisticbrain.com, old-fashioned handwritten notes carry more meaning than ever.
  5. Greet people by name in a genuine way — at the gym, at work, at the community center and anywhere you encounter people you know on a first-name basis. The Washington Post reports that using a person’s name is the ”fastest and most reliable way of building rapport.“
  6. Give up your parking spot. Yes, the parking lot is packed and you’ve been circling around for 5 minutes. But just think how good you’ll feel letting someone else take the spot.
  7. Tip big — maybe not as big as the man who recently gave a Chicago waitress $11,000, but even an extra dollar or two beyond the standard 15–20 percent is sure to make your server feel appreciated.
  8. Make a donation. Regardless of the size of the gift, generosity ”lights up the same part of your brain that responds to food,“ according to a 2016 report from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Not feeling that flush with cash? Volunteer your time!
  9. Spring for treats. Whether it’s a tray of chai lattes for your book club or an ice- cold bottle of water for your mail carrier on a hot day, you’ll be delivering a big-time day brightener.
  10. Smile. Not only will you provide a warm connection point for another human being, but you’ll also be giving your brain a feel-good boost. The mere act of showing off your pearly whites activates neural messaging in your brain, reports Psychology Today — and that boosts your health and happiness.

Can you think of more ways to create kindness in our world? It really costs us nothing to share an attitude of kindness and the rewards for ourselves and our world will be more fruitful than you can imagine! Let’s work on keeping the feeling of holiday kindness all year and enjoy our friends and family at Laurel Springs Mustang!

Laurel Springs Active Adult Living | Fall Holidays!

Active Adult Living is Amazing!
Enjoying the Fall Holidays is even better when you incorporate healthy foods into your holiday meal plans!

You might find that fall flavors and smells pack a lot of comforts, calling up memories of mom’s baking, trips to the pumpkin patch, or holiday meals shared with family. If you’re entertaining at Laurel Springs Mustang this Autumn holiday season, why not incorporate some foods into your menu that actually help to boost emotional moods and your outlook on life?

Grace Pointe Active Adult Living

The nutrients in these five fall foods can deliver a solid boost to your mood.

1. Acorn Squash – There are several health benefits to acorn squash and other squashes in general. Acorn squash is one of the most nutrient-dense squash varieties and contains higher amounts of antioxidants.

An acorn squash contains magnesium, which is an important nutrient for helping with depression and anxiety. If you’re going to eat a vegetable, why not consume one that can positively affect your good mood?

2. Apples – Apples can give you physical health benefits along with boosting your emotional outlook on life. Apples have a high phytochemical profile, they are excellent at preventing DNA damage, regulating hormones, and reducing oxidative damage

3. Pumpkin – How could we ever forget putting pumpkin in our Fall seasonal diet? It sure is much more than just carving a jack-o-lantern for Halloween! Pumpkin contains lutein and zeaxanthin — both of these nutrients are excellent at boosting memory recall in both younger and older adults.

Plus, pumpkin seeds are known to help boost your mood, something we can all use this time of the year. They contain the amino acid tryptophan, which we often equate with Thanksgiving turkey.

Including tryptophan in your diet helps your brain produce serotonin, a chemical known to boost your mood and give you an overall content feeling.

4. Turmeric – Food as medicine is not a new concept. We’ve been using various ingredients in recipes for centuries to help cure many ailments.

Because of its known healing properties, turmeric is considered a wonder spice for so many health conditions including decreasing the symptoms of depression.

Turmeric is great on sweet potatoes, rice, mashed potatoes and just as an overall seasoning. Great health benefits eating this one!

5. Cinnamon – It wouldn’t be Fall if there wasn’t some cinnamon in the air! The smell of cinnamon can change you from a blue funk into a holiday happy place!
Adding this mood-boosting spice to any food or beverage may help stimulate your brain. It also helps regulate blood sugar, which contributes to an overall steady mood.

Cinnamon adds warmth to the flavor in teas, cider, oatmeal, loaves of bread, baked fruit and veggies, and more.

Here are a few tips we’ve picked up on how to ensure that your physical health is a positive influence to happiness and a good mood.

  • Eat More Nutritious Whole Foods.
Keep your focus on lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and non-processed foods. It’s pretty common sense that a bowl of salad with lots of leafy greens is better for you than a baloney sandwich on processed white bread, so focus on whole food nutrition. Always enjoy what’s in front of you at our many potlucks, happy hours and parties, but just remember to make up for that during the rest of the week…you want to still have fun and not overly restrict yourself.
  • Walking and Running for health.
At Laurel Springs, we have many walking trails and great topography to enjoy a stroll around the community. Get out and enjoy our trails, water features, your neighbors and even drop by the clubhouse to say hello to our friendly staff! Keep yourself moving and even invest in a Fitbit or use your smartphone app to track and motivate you to continue your progress with walking and physical activity.
  • Fellowship and Friends.
We all know that loneliness is no fun. Did you know that it is also a dangerous threat to your physical health? Don’t let separation from friends and family cause a decline in our mental and emotional well-being. Get involved with our community activities! We have a full social calendar and social activity staff that can keep you involved with our community, new friends and enhances your feelings of belonging. It’s important to get out and about and enjoy the community here that you have chosen to make you like your new home!

Eat Well to Enjoy a Long and Healthy Retirement | Oklahoma Retirement Tips

Your Oklahoma Retirement Should Be Long and Healthy

It’s well known that you have to work and focus on taking care of your physical health in order to have the optimum lifestyle, no matter what your age. However, when you begin your Oklahoma retirement and become a ‘senior citizen’, you want the definition of your life stage to be more than ‘retired’ and more like ‘active adult’!

Oklahoma Retirement Life

One way to keep that body and mind of yours in top shape is with proper exercise and nutrition.

It’s pretty clear to everyone these days that the consumption of vitamins and minerals in supplements and good organic food are critical in maintaining good health. The proper functioning of your body requires this.

What foods that you consume aid or hinder your health? An occasional fast food drive-through may seem innocent enough. Fast food can get the job done on satisfying your hunger, but for the long haul, you know that good, nutritionally dense food is the best bet for your health and longevity.

You want to maximize your chances of having a long life full of movement and fun!

Healthy Oklahoma retirement

Did you know that there are actual foods that can enhance your health and prevent decline and disease?

Let’s review some of the top foods that you can get at the local grocery that can be beneficial in preserving and maintaining a healthy life for you.

  • Raw Garlic
  • Avocados
  • Cruciferous Vegetables
  • Green Tea
  • Berries
  • Leafy Greens
  • Cooked Tomatoes
  • Carrots
Garlic is GOOD! Garlic contains powerful antioxidants like allicin, proven to remove free radicals from your body. It also boosts immunity, is nutrient dense, improves blood pressure and cholesterol levels, enhances brain function, and is an effective natural detoxifier. One of Mother Nature’s top seasoning and health-enhancing creation is garlic.
Avocados are amazing in their versatility and taste. If you love Mexican food, then you’ll know the pleasure of consuming some quality guacamole and chips. It’s a very beneficial food and full of healthy oils and nutrients.
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are naturally anti-inflammatory, good for your bones and heart, and nutrient dense (without the calories), broccoli is a great addition to a healthy eating plan. Since phytochemicals are heat-sensitive enzymes, the benefits of broccoli are best raw or blanched. Season it if you don’t find them that palatable as they are worth the effort to eat.

Oklahoma Retirement Tips from Laurel Springs Retirement

Green Tea is a wonderful drink, hot or iced. believed to be more powerful than vitamin C in fighting free radical damage. In multiple lab studies, this delicious beverage has been shown to shrink existing tumors and inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Many experts suggest green tea daily as a natural cancer preventative. As an added benefit, it also reduces your risk of heart disease, lowers your LDL (bad) cholesterol while raising your HDL (good) cholesterol, and lowers your blood pressure.
Strawberries slow down the growth of cancer cells, protect your body from heart disease, lower inflammation, prevent memory loss, and help you burn your body’s fat stores. Strawberries and other dark-colored berries – such as black raspberries, blueberries, boysenberries, and, goji berries are a definite plus when it comes to healthy living and eating.
Spinach and dark greens are important. They have incredible health benefits with vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids that your body needs to stay strong and healthy. Learn to love a good salad and your body will thank you for it!
Love tomatoes? You’re in luck!  Lycopene is the antioxidant that causes the red color of tomatoes and it’s a powerful antioxidant known for preventing the formation of certain cancers. They also lower your risk of heart disease and are naturally anti-inflammatory.

Salads are a great way to get more carrots in your diet. Slice or shred them on top of greens and salads. They contain falcarinol and falcarindiol – natural pesticides in the vegetable that scientists believe are the reason for their cancer-fighting abilities. Of course, they’re good for your vision, skin, and as a natural detoxifier as well.

Remember that life is for living! To enjoy a long and healthy Oklahoma retirement life, you have to pay attention to the type and quality of the food that you eat. Your engine can only run well when you provide it with the best fuel.

Loneliness can be Deadly! Keep Your Parents Close in your Life

At Laurel Springs Retirement we believe that social connection and friendships are key to a healthy and happy retirement. Keeping family close and sharing quality time together is just as important as spending time with your friends. Laurel Springs Retirement provides the clubhouse, amenities and social activities for friendship connections, but it’s up to the kids to start making an effort to schedule time with their aging parents and let them know they are loved and cared for as they move through their retirement years.

Laurel Springs Retirement

Don’t avoid making that phone call and touching base with your aging parents! Better yet, schedule some time in your busy life and get together for dinner and some conversation.

Many of us grow up without really ‘growing up’. We might be nurturing some issue with our childhood or how we were raised. It’s not important in the big picture of things. The big picture is that family is important, forgiveness is necessary and there is no real excuse for not spending time and nurturing your aging parents. After all, who raised and nurtured you?

Recent studies have proved that not providing your aging parents with quality time with you, social interaction and appreciation for all they have done, can significantly affect their physical and mental health. Getting old is not always the pleasurable experience many imagine, as being retired can be great for the more free time available, but more free ALONE time is not good for anyone. That includes your parents.

Laurel Springs Retirement is Oklahoma’s Premier Active Adult Living Community!
Enjoy Your Family and Friends Here!

What did this study find out about these negative effects on physical and emotional health?

The study concluded that loneliness is a significant factor in the decline of quality of life in older adults, including the risk of depression, cognitive impairment and health problems like coronary artery disease, and may even lead to an earlier death.

Specifically, the study looked at 1,600 adults with an average age of 71. Researchers found that 23 percent of participants who reported being lonely died within six years of the study, while only 14 percent of those who reported having companionship died during the same six-year period.

Oklahoma Retirement Life

“Our social relationships are important not only to our quality of life but also our longevity,” said study author Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, to WebMD.

“Throughout human history, we have relied on others for survival such as protection and food, and despite modern advancements that may [help with] certain aspects of survival so that we can live more independently, it appears that our relationships nonetheless still impact odds of survival,” she says.

One great benefit of spending time with others, particularly your parents is the benefit of laughter. You rarely will have a good laugh sitting in front of a computer screen, watching the negative news on television or living at your work desk. Remember that  Laughing is a powerful antidote to declining health, having been shown to boost immunity, lower blood pressure and stimulate both blood flow and mental activity.

So let’s all agree and make an effort to fix this issue of Senior loneliness!

Spending time with your parents benefits you, too. The wisdom passed down through generations can be invaluable, and no one quite understands you as Mom and Dad.

Diet and Exercise is not NUTS when it comes to your Senior Health

Staying Young And Healthy With Healthy Nuts?

Believe it or not, the first created human beings who inhabited this planet, Adam and Eve, already had healthy nuts in their diet. In the Genesis, God provided them fruits that bear seeds that we now know as nuts. After thousands of years, we now understand why God never failed to create this fruit and seed in one. And a handful of it a day would never let you go wrong. Put healthy nuts in your diet!

Laurel Springs Retirement is a blessing to my retirement life!

A HEARTy Snack

Almonds, macadamia, pistachio nuts, walnuts, and hazelnuts are not just for the appetite, they also are great sources of a number of health benefits. The studies of the Seventh Day Adventists during the 1990s first elevated the status of healthy nuts to its consumers. The study of this religious group in Loma Linda, California indicated that those who eat healthy nuts live two and a half years more than those who do not.

Healthy Nuts for Aging

(The Seventh Day Adventist is a religious group that advocates healthy living by not smoking and drinking, and having a vegetarian diet. Members of this religious domination who live in Loma Linda live 5-10 years longer)

Eating Health Nuts is NOT Nuts!

Nuts are said to contain Omega 3 fatty acids. These are unsaturated fatty acids that may decrease the risk of acquiring coronary heart disease. People who eat five times or more of it every week had roughly a 50 percent decrease in risk of dying from heart disease as compared to those who eat only nuts once a week. Those who eat one to four times in a week reduced their risk of acquiring the heart disease by 25%.

healthy nuts for health

Recently, researchers also found out that walnuts and almonds can lower the blood levels of bad cholesterol which can lead to cardiovascular diseases. Besides its protective effect on the heart, this fruit has a very low glycemic index. In fact, healthy nuts are now being recommended by many dietitians to patients with diabetes mellitus 2.

KEEPING YOU AND YOUR BRAIN YOUNG

Usually, what’s beneficial to the heart is also favorable to the brain. Nuts are not just a hearty snack but also a brain food. It helps keep your arteries clear so it lessens the risk of clogging arteries which can lead to stroke. Healthy nuts also promote the production of precursors of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, which improves the mood, and reduces depression.

One ounce of nuts is the recommended amount to eat. That is equivalent to 24 almonds or 12 walnuts. Nuts are full of calories so be careful in eating too much of eating pleasure. Eating more than one ounce is fine unless you replace unhealthy high-caloric foods in exchange for nuts.

Here’s the deal: those who eat one ounce of healthy nuts five times a week become 3.3 years younger for the males, and 4.4 years for the females.

In addition, you would also live two to three years longer compared to those who don’t.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EAT?

Well, raw, unroasted, unsalted healthy nuts are best for your body.

Almonds are not just tasty but are also beneficial because they are alkaline-formers even though they are high in protein. Having alkaline is good for the body because we need to keep up with the high acidic content of the body (which is the result of the oxygenation of all that we eat).

Walnuts are the healthy nuts that have the most abundance of Omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts are the kind that is beneficial to the diabetics.

Here are some suggestions on areas of focus if you are serious about achieving and maintaining a healthy senior lifestyle.
  • Heart Disease – Did you know that 37 percent of men and 27 percent of women who are 65 and older can have heart and cardiovascular issues? • Bone Density and Osteoporosis – You don’t want to lose your mobility and ability to get around the world and visit your friends and family. Low bone mass can create serious problems! • Balance and Fall Dangers – Falling has been the downfall (no pun intended) of many seniors. In later life, the most critical lifestyle incident can be the unexpected trip or fall. Most falls occur in your personal residence. Think of the areas in your home that would cause this to be a problem…slippery bathroom areas, rugs, furniture.
