6 Quick Tips to Live the Best Independent Senior Living Lifestyle

Living a healthy lifestyle and balancing your work and family life isn’t easy. But there are plenty of small things you can do to speed up the process and feel better. Here are some quick tips to help you get on the right track to a healthier lifestyle at Laurel Springs Retirement in Mustang, Oklahoma

1. Cut out takeaway and fast foods
When people think about living a healthy lifestyle, they often think this means eating nothing but greens and drinking exclusively water. However, getting on the right track consists of small steps in the right direction, and for many people, this is as simple as just cutting out fast food and processed foods from the supermarkets.

2. Protect your skin
It’s recommended that you use sunscreen every day, even if the sun isn’t out. In order to make this easier, buy moisturizer which has SPF15 or higher. For those who wear makeup, you can buy foundation, BB cream, and primers which have sun protection in them too.

3. Drink more water
If you don’t drink any water during the average day, start by drinking just one glass or even half a glass. If you struggle to drink plain water, consider adding a few drops of fresh lemon juice or investing in a water bottle which is fruit infused. Gradually build up to drinking two liters of water per day.

4. Take the stairs
Not everybody has the time to fit in regular exercise every day, but small changes when it comes to your activity can help you to live a healthier lifestyle. Take the stairs up the office, and if it’s a long way to go, take one of two flights of stairs and then take the elevator the rest of the way. Go to the next bus stop along to get a few extra minutes of exercise into your routine, or just make an effort to stand up from your desk more often.

5. Plan meals in advance
This can help you to save money as well as get on the right track to a healthier lifestyle. At the start of the week, or before you go shopping for food, make a list of potential meals and on which days you would like to eat them. Buy food containers and refrigerate healthy leftovers to get a second meal out of them.

6. Stretch every morning
Don’t underestimate the value of stretching your body and helping yourself to stay flexible. The main reason why people start to feel stiff and full of aches quite early on in life is often down to a lack of movement. This is particularly important if you spend most of the day sitting down in an office or you suffer from joint pain. Gently stretching every morning is a habit which will help you in the long term.

Successful Retirement Living Community – What makes the most impact?

There are many things that impact your health, some positive and some negative. When making a choice in senior retirement communities, it’s up to you to do all that you can to avoid the unhealthy ones. Of course, it won’t always easy. Obstacles sometimes get in the way. But, by learning more about the following five factors, which positively impact your health, you’ll be well on your way to better health. The factors covered in this active lifestyle Laurel Springs blog post are quality nutrition, hydration, detoxification, oxygenation, and alkalization. Hopefully, you’re already familiar with a few.

Quality Nutrition for Successful Retirement Independent Living

Everyone needs to be concerned about quality nutrition, regardless of where they feel they stand health-wise. There are SO many benefits to the proper nutrition that its somewhat difficult to know where to begin. Here are some of them for your consideration when you decide to make your home at Laurel Springs Retirement.

Increased Productivity for Active Adult 55+ Lifestyles

Recent data indicates that eating foods that are unhealthy for you actually put you at a higher risk of productivity loss. Some studies put that number as high as 66 percent. All the more reason to think of healthy food as fuel for your brain, don’t you think?

Fewer Wrinkles make for Happy Senior Living

Foods that contain high water content help to moisturize your skin. They also contain antioxidants, which help to reduce the likelihood of cell damage and keeps your skin younger looking for a longer period of time. Go one step further and include foods like salmon, on the menu. Salmon is high in Omega-3 fatty acids that are also beneficial to your skin.

Saving Money by Eating Right for Retirement Living

By sticking to a healthy diet, you generally have fewer medical bills. In addition, you’ll probably eat less, which means you’ll save money on groceries. This is especially true if you’re one to eat a lot of sugary treats and/or fast food meals.

Fewer Cravings Late at Night

It probably won’t happen immediately, but eating healthier is a great way to reduce cravings. Lean proteins and complex carbohydrates do an excellent job of stabilizing your blood sugar. This helps to alleviate a rapid drop in blood sugar, which causes a craving.

Healthier Smiles Make Us All Feel Great

The calcium in milk and other dairy products helps to strengthen your teeth. Yogurt is known to contain microorganisms that are helpful in fighting the bacteria that causes bad breath. Research indicates that Omega-3, found in fish, may even reduce the chances of gum disease.

Longer Life for Happy Retirement Living

Although nothing is guaranteed 100 percent, quality nutrition goes a long way in helping you to live longer. Several studies indicate the possibility of low-meat, vegetarian or diets high in nut consumption very well adding years to your life.

Happier Disposition means better relationships and self-esteem

The next time you feel a bit gloomy, why not take a minute out of your day to eat a banana or a couple of pieces of dark chocolate? The average-sized banana contains 10 mg of dopamine. Dark chocolate is packed to the brim with polyphenol. Both of these substances are known to give your mood a boost when you need it the most.

An added benefit to all of these things is the fact that learning to eat healthier automatically makes you more knowledgeable about nutrition. So, not only are you helping yourself, you’re helping your family as well. What could be better than that?

Hydration is key to Retirement Nutrition Success

Staying hydrated is extremely important for overall health. What many people don’t realize is that drinking plenty of fluids is also necessary for optimal heart health. This is especially true in warm weather.

Every single cell in your body needs water. So do your tissues and organs. The body requires water to lubricate joints, maintain proper temperature and remove waste products.

Keeping your body hydrated helps your heart pump blood through your blood vessels. It also helps muscles work more efficiently. In other words, when you drink the proper amount of water or other fluids your heart doesn’t have to work as hard.

Remember that Water Is Best!

Water is the best thing to drink when it comes to staying hydrated… especially when you’re exercising. If you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy the taste of water alone, try eating fruits and vegetables that have high water content. These include, but are not limited to:

* cucumbers

* iceberg lettuce

* celery

* radishes

* tomatoes

* green peppers

* watermelon

* citrus fruits

* Strawberries

* and cantaloupe

As you can see, you have plenty of healthy choices. For additional options, doing a quick search engine search will bring up many other suggestions.

Sports drinks are recommended in very hot weather. However, if you’re trying to steer clear of added sugar and extra calories, you might want to think twice. Any sugary drink, such as soda or fruit juice, tends to be harder on your stomach. And, anything with caffeine in it actually causes you to lose fluid, which obviously defeats the purpose.

How Much is Too Much?

You’ve probably heard or read somewhere that you need to drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water per day. While many people still believe this to be true, some physicians will tell you that it depends on things like climate, the type of clothes you wear and whether or not you’re exercising.

Never let the fact that you feel thirsty be an indication that you’re getting dehydrated. If you’re thirsty, you’ve ALREADY reached that point. If you perspire more than average, you need to drink more fluids. If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, you need to drink more fluids. If you’re elderly or pregnant, you need to drink more fluids.

Believe it or not sometimes when you feel hungry, you actually might be thirsty instead. If you’ve eaten within the last two hours, try this trick. Drink a glass of water and wait approximately 10 minutes. If after that time, you no longer feel hungry, you’ll know you were dealing with dehydration.

One of the best ways to monitor your hydration level is to keep track of the color of your urine. If it’s pale or clear it means you’re properly hydrated. If it’s dark, you need to drink more liquids.

Don’t ever take dehydration lightly. Not only can it lead to painful issues such as headaches and swollen feet, but it can also lead to life-threatening conditions like heat stroke.

Detoxification can do wonders for Active Adult Living Optimization

If you’re feeling sluggish and lacking energy, it may be time to consider body detoxification. Detoxification, or detox, is the process of cleansing the blood by removing impurities in the liver, where toxins are naturally processed. This allows the body to process and removes toxins more efficiently, which leads to improved health and a better quality of life.

Should You Detox?

It is recommended that everyone detox at least once every year. A detox program can help alleviate symptoms that are otherwise unexplainable, such as fatigue, skin irritation, allergic reactions or even bags under the eye. Even if you dont feel like anything is amiss, detoxing helps to cleanse the whole body and leaves you feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

Cleansing Your Diet to Improve Senior Living Health

There are many different detox recipes and programs to choose from, all focused on cleansing the body and eliminating toxins. One very popular and tasty way to include cleansing foods into your diet is detoxifying juices and smoothies.

Replacing one meal a day with a detox smoothie goes a long way toward getting rid of toxins and maintaining your metabolism. Stay away from pre-packaged shakes or other chemically enhanced products – the best ingredients to use are all-natural fruits and vegetables. Popular options include:

* raspberries

* blueberries

* oranges

* apples

* spinach

* kale

* bananas

* tomatoes

* and carrots

Any natural fruits or vegetables will do, especially those rich in fiber or vitamin C. With so many healthy foods and flavors to choose from, you can concoct a smoothie that suits your taste and is an excellent addition to your diet at the same time.

Fasting for Senior Living Health

Taking a break from eating gives our digestive system a chance to rest and rejuvenate. This means it will be more efficient when its time for it to work again. In order to give your digestive system a break, replace your meals with juices or smoothies for a day or two of fasting.

This will be easiest if you do it on a day off so that you can rest and avoid situations that might otherwise tempt you to eat. This detoxifying method may not be much fun during the actual fast, but it will be worth it afterward when you feel energetic and refreshed.

Stay Away From Toxins if you want to have a Happy Senior Retirement Life

Toxins that we take in either through food or our environment get in the way of our body’s healing processes. Stay away from refined sugars, saturated fats, coffee, cigarettes, and alcohol. Also, try to use natural alternatives to both cleaning and personal care products, to avoid exposure to minor levels of toxins.

Oxygenation for Great Health

Oxygenation is the process of oxygen molecules making their way into all tissues of the body. Oxygen is not only necessary for breathing, but it also plays an important role in every metabolic process, which occurs in the body. Another term for oxidization is medical oxygen saturation.

How Oxygen is Used to Fuel your Senior Health Success

Our bodies use oxygen for a number of different processes. When we breathe, the oxygen in the air that we inhale is diffused into our bloodstream. This oxygen-rich blood makes its way through our bodies and finds places where oxygen is needed. Oxygen molecules in our body combine with certain enzymes to help out with many of our body’s processes. A waste product of these processes is carbon dioxide, which is transported back to the lungs.

Restoring Oxygen Balance

There are several easy things you can do to help restore your oxygen balance. This includes:

* drinking an adequate amount of water

* adhering to an alkaline diet

* exercising daily

* breathing properly

Without the proper amount of water, all body functions are diminished. Filtered water is the best choice, because of its smaller groups of water molecules, which provide better overall hydration on a cellular level.

Adhering to an alkaline diet is explained in more detail below. In a nutshell, it refers to eating more plant-based foods such as kale and spinach and eating less processed and animal-based foods. Along with the diet, it’s helpful to take an iron supplement. Women need at least 18 mg, daily. Men require no less than 8 mg per day.

The type of exercise you choose is completely up to you. Walking, biking and hiking are particularly good choices to help oxygenate your body. In fact, in this case, its actually more beneficial to walk for 15 minutes a day, as opposed to working out at the gym for two full hours.

Yes, there is a proper way to breathe. Whenever possible, avoid breathing from the chest. It is much better to breathe slowly from your diaphragm and through your nose. Twelve breaths per minute are usually adequate.

Oxygen and Detoxification for Senior Living Success

A major factor in our health is how efficiently our bodies make use of nutrients on the cellular level. Another factor is how effectively waste and toxins are removed. Our body has several ways of getting rid of cellular waste. Much of it is dissolved into water and leaves the body through urine and sweat.

But, some of this waste can only be neutralized by oxygen molecules, in a process called oxidation. Because our bodies need oxygen to process waste, avoiding environmental toxins and maintaining proper oxygen balance leaves us feeling great and could even help prevent disease.

Alkalization for Senior Health Improvement

Alkalizing your body is another wonderful way to stay healthy. Simply put, alkalization is shifting your body’s pH to the proper level. In the event the thought of this makes you nervous, there’s no need to worry. It’s actually much easier than it sounds. The end goal is to have a body which is more alkaline than acidic.

Optimal pH Level for Seniors

When your body is highly acidic, it tries to balance itself out by getting nutrients from your cells and bones. That’s bad. The optimal pH level, to strive for, is just a little over 7. Once this number is reached, it greatly reduces the possibility of disease and cellular damage.

When your body reaches this level, it’s generally easy to maintain, as long as you know how to do so. The process involves replacing the acid you eat and drink with foods that alkalize.

Increased Health Benefits of an Alkaline Diet for Senior Citizens

There are many benefits to an alkaline diet. Statistics indicate that if your diet consists of at least 70 percent of alkaline foods, you’ll improve your quality of life substantially. Health benefits include an increase in energy, a more restful sleep, a slower aging process, a clearer mind and increase protection against certain kinds of cancer. That sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?

Foods to Avoid if you want Maximum Senior Health

There are several foods and beverages to avoid on an alkaline diet. The top five categories include:

* processed sugar

* meat

* dairy products

* coffee

* soda

Cutting down or eliminating these foods not only helps to balance your pH level, it makes you healthier overall.

Foods to Enjoy for Superb Senior Living Health

There are many types of foods that are great for increasing your alkaline level. You don’t have to partake in a boring diet in order to get healthier. Think about incorporating some of the following items into your meal plan. It is probably simpler than you think!

* leafy greens

* Chia seeds

* almonds

* Beets

* bananas

* garlic

* figs

* lemons

* melon

* tomatoes

* and broccoli

Retirement Health Consequences of an Unbalanced pH Level

When your pH level is out of whack, it has the potential of affecting your health in many ways. Excess acid is stored in fat cells. The reason for this is that the fat neutralizes the acid. There is good news, however. Once you reach a pH level of 7, it is entirely possible to lose as much as a pound of fat per day.

Your arteries are affected by pH levels, as well. Why? When your body is highly acidic, it automatically produces cholesterol to protect the arteries. High cholesterol can lead to heart attacks. The upside to this is, just like the excess fat cells, the extra cholesterol will disappear once your body is properly alkalized.

Believe it or not, there is also a possibility that you’ll shrink if your pH level remains off balance for long periods of time. This occurs when calcium begins to dissipate from your bones due to the acid.

Once your body begins to balance out and become more alkaline, you may experience something that is often referred to as “alkalize and energize.” This simply means that you’ll start to automatically feel more energized and ready to take on the world. Congratulations!

Taking Things Slow to Get the Ball Rolling for Better Senior Health

When it comes to information about these five factors, which positively impact your health, this is just the tip of the iceberg. However, it gives you a great starting point. What you do with the information is, of course, up to you.

If you feel overwhelmed, as many individuals do, tackle one area at a time. You’re not going to feel transformed overnight. Obviously, it’s going to take some time. But, with patience and due diligence, you’ll start feeling much healthier before you know it. At that point, all of your hard work will be more than worth it!

Walking vs. Running for Independent Living Fitness.

Walking Vs. Running for Overall Health and Fitness at Laurel Springs Independent Living

Feeling the amazing Oklahoma Spring weather and thinking that 2019 would be a great year to start working on your physical health improvement? If you live at Laurel Springs Mustang independent living, you already know about our superb exercise facility and clubhouse. You’ve seen the fun that Summer will bring with our resort style swimming pool. Why now get an early 2019 start on getting your Summer fun body into shape and explore our walking trails?
Should you choose walking versus running for overall health benefits here at Laurel Springs?
Both aerobic activities are simple to perform and promote weight loss. And both walking and running help regulate a healthy sleep rhythm, elevate your energy levels while awake, and even allow you to maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Running and walking can also be social exercises that you enjoy with friends or family members, and you can take a jog or a hike just about any time of the year, here at Laurel Springs.
Choose an Independent Living community with great walking trails and open spaces!
Just remember that if you choose walking over running to improve your overall health, you will need to walk twice as far as you run to gain the same weight-loss benefits. Running is much more rigorous on your body and burns more calories. But walking is also much easier on your joints since the impact of your foot striking the ground is lessened. If you are just beginning some type of dedicated physical regimen, walking is definitely recommended, and you can always build up your endurance and physical fitness to include running in the future.

Always Check With Your Health Professional Before Making Big Changes in Your Physical Exercise Regimen.

And in some cases, walking can give you many of the same benefits as running, with less downside. For instance, extensive research taken from the Runners and Walkers Health Study shows that both running and walking equally cut down on your risk of contracting age-related cataracts. That significant body of information, compiled from tens of thousands of runners and walkers, also showed that runners could expect a reduction in the risk of contracting heart disease by about 4.5% by running one hour a day.
But those who spent that same one hour daily simply walking cut their risk of heart disease by over 9%. Certainly, walking and running both improve your overall health and fitness much more than if you were sedentary instead. So choose whichever exercise best fits your current fitness levels and situation. And for weight loss, running is definitely the better vehicle than walking. That is because of the increased energy expenditure, elevated heart rate, and calorie burn. Just be sure to wear runner appropriate shoes that protect your body and joints from excessive wear and tear!

Laurel Springs Mustang Provides The Best in Independent Senior Living

You should always consult a doctor before adding any type of exercise to your daily routine. But both walking and running are excellent ways to get you up and active and are low-cost activities which you can enjoy even if you only have a limited amount of time on your hands. There is no argument that running or walking is much healthier than not doing either, so put one foot in front of the other today and begin to enjoy the heart and total body benefits are that these simple but healthy exercises can provide.

Is it cold enough for you in Oklahoma this February?

Is it cold enough for you in Oklahoma this February?

Cold weather tips

Here are some tips we’ve found online that can help with being aware of the issues of getting a bit older and cold weather.

People who are sick may have special problems keeping warm. Do not let it get too cold inside and dress warmly. Even if you keep your temperature between 60°F and 65°F, your home may not be warm enough to keep you safe. This is a special problem if you live alone because there is no one else to feel the chilliness of the house or notice if you are having symptoms of hypothermia.

Here are some tips for keeping warm while you’re inside:

  • Set your heat to at least 68–70°F. To save on heating bills, close off rooms you are not using. Close the vents and shut the doors in these rooms, and keep the basement door closed. Place a rolled towel in front of all doors to keep out drafts.
  • Make sure your house isn’t losing heat through windows. Keep your blinds and curtains closed.
  • Dress warmly on cold days even if you are staying in the house. Throw a blanket over your legs. Wear socks and slippers.
  • When you go to sleep, wear long underwear under your pajamas, and use extra covers. Wear a cap or hat.
  • Make sure you eat enough food to keep up your weight. If you don’t eat well, you might have less fat under your skin. Body fat helps you to stay warm.
  • Drink alcohol moderately, if at all. Alcoholic drinks can make you lose body heat.
  • Ask family or friends to check on you during cold weather. If a power outage leaves you without heat, try to stay with a relative or friend.

You may be tempted to warm your room with a space heater. But, some space heaters are fire hazards, and others can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has information on the use of space heaters. Read the following for more information: Reducing Fire Hazards for Portable Electric Heaters and Seven Highly Effective Portable Heater Safety Habits.

Bundle Up on Windy, Cold Days

Heavy wind can quickly lower your body temperature. Check the weather forecast for windy and cold days. On those days, try to stay inside or in a warm place. If you have to go out, wear warm clothes, and don’t stay out in the cold and wind for a long time.

Here are some other tips:

  • Dress for the weather if you have to go out on chilly, cold, or damp days.
  • Wear loose layers of clothing. The air between the layers helps to keep you warm.
  • Put on a hat and scarf. You lose a lot of body heat when your head and neck are uncovered.
  • Wear a waterproof coat or jacket if it’s snowy.
  • Change your clothes right away if they get damp or wet.

Illness, Medicines, and Cold Weather

Some illnesses may make it harder for your body to stay warm.

  • Thyroid problems can make it hard to maintain normal body temperature.
  • Diabetes can keep blood from flowing normally to provide warmth.
  • Parkinson’s disease and arthritis can make it hard to put on more clothes, use a blanket, or get out of the cold.
  • Memory loss can cause a person to go outside without the right clothing.

Talk with your doctor about your health problems and how to prevent hypothermia.

Taking some medicines and not being active also can affect body heat. These include medicines you get from your doctor and those you buy over-the-counter, such as some cold medicines. Ask your doctor if the medicines you take may affect body heat. Always talk with your doctor before you stop taking any medication.

Here are some topics to talk about with your doctor to stay safe in cold weather:

  • Ask your doctor about the signs of hypothermia.
  • Talk to your doctor about any health problems and medicines that can make hypothermia a special problem for you. Your doctor can help you find ways to prevent hypothermia.
  • Ask about safe ways to stay active even when it’s cold outside.

What Are the Warning Signs of Hypothermia?

Sometimes it is hard to tell if a person has hypothermia. Look for clues. Is the house very cold? Is the person not dressed for cold weather? Is the person speaking slower than normal and having trouble keeping his or her balance?

Watch for the signs of hypothermia in yourself, too. You might become confused if your body temperature gets very low. Talk to your family and friends about the warning signs so they can look out for you.

Early signs of hypothermia:

  • Cold feet and hands
  • Puffy or swollen face
  • Pale skin
  • Shivering (in some cases the person with hypothermia does not shiver)
  • Slower than normal speech or slurring words
  • Acting sleepy
  • Being angry or confused

Later signs of hypothermia:

  • Moving slowly, trouble walking, or being clumsy
  • Stiff and jerky arm or leg movements
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Blacking out or losing consciousness

Call 9-1-1 right away if you think someone has warning signs of hypothermia.

What to do after you call 9-1-1:

  • Try to move the person to a warmer place.
  • Wrap the person in a warm blanket, towels, or coats—whatever is handy. Even your own body warmth will help. Lie close, but be gentle.
  • Give the person something warm to drink, but avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine, such as regular coffee.
  • Do not rub the person’s legs or arms.
  • Do not try to warm the person in a bath.
  • Do not use a heating pad.

If you are interested in leveraging the walking trails, fitness gym, and our community activities to enhance Senior lifestyle exercise opportunities, then you’ll want to do some research on what time of day is best for walking and exercise.

Love Walking? What’s the best time of day to Walk and Exercise?

When you are planning out your walking routine, you might wonder if there is the best time of day to take a walk.

From a calories-burned point of view, there isn’t one time of day better than the other to walk. However, there are more considerations than burning calories that may influence when you walk; some bodily functions, and especially the habit of walking, respond better based on the time of day you walk.

The time of day for walks that are best for Senior lifestyle exercise is broken down into four periods throughout the day:

  • Morning Walks
  • Noon Walks
  • Afternoon Walks
  • Evening Walks

Morning Walking:

A morning walk has several advantages, such as sharpening your mental acuity and revving up your metabolism that will carry through for the rest of the day. So while you don’t burn any more calories by exercising in the morning, you will end up burning more throughout the day by going for morning walks.

The healthy lifestyle improvements that you could experience include improvement in your blood pressure, walking your dog with you, positive mental health and mood boost, walking to improve balance and prevent falls, avoiding some issues of heart disease, and feeling good about establishing a healthy daily routine for yourself.

Noon Walking:

A Noon walk, usually done at work, exercising during your lunch break before eating the healthy lunch you brought from home, reduces stress, curbs hunger and improves blood flow so you can maintain your sharpness throughout the afternoon. If you’re retired here at Laurel Springs then you probably won’t find this time period a problem to work into your daily activities.

Afternoon Walking:

Studies have shown that exercising between 3 pm and 7 pm is the best time to build endurance and muscle. Increasing your endurance not only allows you to walk farther but faster before you’ll get tired.

Building muscle gives your body better definition, tones the muscles you already have along with increasing their size. Larger muscles mean more calories burned per day, but don’t worry, you won’t build enough to give you that bulked look.

The only conflict you might find is that Laurel Springs has many of our social events occurring during this time period. Check with our Social Director, Mary Harris, to make sure you won’t miss the chance for a great afternoon walk and participating in our wonderful community activities.

Evening Walking:

Exercising in the evening is a good way to reduce stress from a day of work. This time of day can be easier for some people as their muscles are already warm and flexible from the day’s activities. For many people, this perceived reduction of effort required makes exercising more enjoyable than during other times of the day.

A big advantage to evening walking is being able to stop by our clubhouse before or after and still participate in social fun. Sunsets are also wonderful at Laurel Springs Mustang.

Some people end up not exercising because they can’t find a 30-minute block of time each day to devote to it. However walking time is cumulative – for example, you get the same benefits from walking 10 minutes three times per day as you do once for 30 minutes. So if “chunking” works better for you, then walk according to that plan.

Experts agree that it isn’t the time of day you exercise that is important, but to do it when it best fits into your schedule. As with all senior lifestyle exercise plans, consistency counts, so if you can find a time of day when you can routinely walk, you’ll start to see results sooner and derive more benefits from walking. Staying active is what’s the most important thing to focus on with any exercise program.

Thinking that walking could be a great exercise and pastime for you here at Laurel Springs Mustang? Come by our clubhouse, visit with our staff and get familiar with our walking trails here at Laurel Springs Mustang. We provide the facilities and trails to make cardio walking activity a part of your daily health plan, now it’s just up to you to make it happen!

What are some additional exercise activities you might want to research here at Laurel Springs?

We keep our residents fully booked with fun and informative social activities, happy hours, day trips, potluck dinner socials, and concerts. It’s important to come by the clubhouse and let our Social Director know about your interest in activities for your community. We are always open to hearing about your interests and would love to structure our social calendar around suggestions from our residents on things of interest to do.

How to Make Time to Walk More Each Day at Laurel Springs Mustang.
Laurel Springs Health Tips!

We are all busy nowadays, so how does one find the time to walk every day? It really isn’t that hard. For most people, it requires committing a little more time here and there out of each day. That’s why we are publishing Laurel Springs health tips!

Many people that should be exercising don’t because they believe they have to do it in one chunk of time; that is not true. While we should each get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, it can be done in small chunks of time throughout the day and still reap the same benefit.

At Laurel Springs Retirement, not only do we want to encourage you to start walking, but we also are big supporters of exercise using the facilities and equipment we provide to you here in our community! Whether you decide to stroll our beautifully landscaped grounds and walking trails or take advantage of our climate protected clubhouse exercise options, we welcome you getting into the Laurel Springs health initiatives.

Laurel Springs Health Tips

But keeping track of small chunks of time spent each day walking can be trying and most people will soon give up. Instead, let technology keep track of it for you in the form of steps walked.

Wear a pedometer or accelerometer and strive to walk 10,000 steps each day. Before you dismiss that goal as impossible, try it. You are already racking up more steps walking each day than you realize. By creatively adding in some of these opportunities to your workday, you’ll soon reach your daily goal.

Workday and Lifestyle Walking Opportunities at Laurel Springs

There are many ways you can get in some extra steps while going to or from work, or while at work or home here at Laurel Springs Mustang. Here are some Laurel Springs Health Tips for you:

  • Instead of finding a parking spot close to your workplace or home, park at the far end of the lot and walk in the rest of the way. It only takes a few extra minutes each way and the steps add to your daily goal.
  • If you take public transportation, get off a stop or two before the closest stop to your work and walk the rest of the way.
  • Once you are at your workplace, take the stairs instead of the elevator to your office or at least for a few floors.
  • As a healthy alternative to emailing a coworker in your same building, get out of your chair and walk over to their desk.
  • If you have to go to a different floor for lunch, walk there and back.
  • Instead of eating a big lunch in the cafeteria, bring a healthy lunch to work. Strap on your walking shoes and go outside for a walk. Just allow yourself enough time to get back, cool down and eat.

By incorporating a few of these tips into your workday, you will most likely be at goal and you added very little extra time to your workday or day to day personal activities.

As a final note, keep track of the number of steps walked each day. On days when you don’t meet goal, figure out what you can change so that the next time you reach your daily goal. It could be walking further, faster or seeking out a new step opportunity. Use a FitBit or a smartphone app or accessory to help you keep track of progress.

Remember that here at Laurel Springs Mustang, our lovely gated community is focused on providing you the best in social, physical and emotional health-enhancing opportunities for you to live your best years ever! Enjoy reading our Laurel Springs health tips and then schedule a tour of our active adult community!
